Opportunity

In late 2007 the documentary Desert Bayou, by filmmaker Alex LeMay, opened in theaters, nationwide. The film explores the nature of human relationships as they struggle to adapt to displacement following the Katrina disaster.

The initiative was to successfully launch the film with significant social visibility, generate media coverage, build awareness around the releases in Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Houston.

Expertise

For this particular film, garnering community support was essential to the film's success. Staging promotional red carpet premiere events and forming alliances with leading national community organizations helped to generate positive talk-value and support of the film among media (print, broadcast and on-line) and key third-party influencers/leaders.

 

Impact

After debuting in New York City at a red-carpet event held at the Museum of Modern Art, the film opened across the country to great success. “Desert Bayou” filmmaker Alex LeMay was also honored by New York City council members at City Hall for his documentary and the film has been nominated for the NAACP Image Awards.
